Transitional Elegance: Kitchen Remodel in Elmhurst, Illinois

Full Design-Build Custom Kitchen

When we set out to design and build this Elmhurst kitchen, our goal was to create a transitional masterpiece. Consequently, we blended the warmth of natural wood with crisp designer paint tones. As a result, we achieved a space that is as functional for a professional chef as it is beautiful for entertaining.

The Perimeter: Farrow & Ball Sophistication

Specifically, we selected the iconic Farrow & Ball Shaded White for the perimeter cabinetry. This color offers a soft, lived-in feel. Furthermore, it changes beautifully with the natural light of the Elmhurst morning.

To provide a sharp, grounding contrast, we installed Brilliant Black Honed countertops. This matte surface extends into a dramatic apron waterfall sink base. Additionally, we included a dedicated appliance garage. This high-end detail creates a seamless look that easily hides daily clutter.

The Showpiece: Reeded Walnut Island

The heart of this kitchen is the oversized custom island. To start, we utilized walnut wood finished with a General Finishes Antique Walnut stain. This combination brings out the rich, chocolatey grain. Moreover, the star of the island is the reeded texture on the drawer fronts. This fluted design detail adds incredible tactile interest to the room.

In addition to the woodwork, the island is topped with Charm Quartzite. This natural stone is famous for its ethereal veining and extreme durability. Notably, we carried this stone onto the walls as a custom-shaped slab backsplash. You can find this elegant detail behind the professional Wolf range and the integrated coffee bar.

Thoughtful Details & Functionality

No luxury kitchen is complete without precision-engineered storage. Therefore, this project features several custom integrations:

Integrated Coffee Bar: Hidden behind walnut cabinetry with a built-in prep sink and “Charm” quartzite splash.

Mixed Metal Finishes: Black hardware on the perimeter to match the countertops, and brass pulls on the island to complement the walnut.

Custom Arched Hood: A clean, architectural focal point over the range.

Cohesive Flooring: The white oak floors were finished with a custom 50/50 blend of Weathered Oak and Special Walnut, tying the dark island and light walls together.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the benefit of a reeded wood island?
Reeded or fluted wood adds a layer of texture and architectural detail that breaks up flat surfaces. It is a hallmark of “New Transitional” design, adding a modern edge to traditional walnut.

Is Charm Quartzite a good choice for kitchens?
Yes. Quartzite is a natural stone that is harder than granite and offers the look of marble with much higher resistance to scratching and acid etching, making it ideal for high-traffic islands.

What color is Farrow & Ball Shaded White?
Shaded White is a light gray-beige (greige). It lacks the yellow undertones of traditional cream, making it a perfect neutral that pairs exceptionally well with dark wood stains like walnut.

Why use a slab backsplash instead of tile?
A slab backsplash, especially one with an organic “shaped” edge as seen in this Elmhurst project, eliminates grout lines. This creates a cleaner look and allows the natural beauty of the stone’s veining to become the room’s primary art piece.
